Alex Martínez Suárez

Alex Martínez Suárez is Dominican architect, researcher and educator. He holds a Master in Advanced Architecture from Berlage Institute, The Netherlands, and a Graduate Diploma in Museum Studies at Harvard Extension School, USA. He is also alumni from the curatorial studies program Curando Caribe. He is an active member of DoCoMoMo Dominicano, Erwin Walter Palm Foundation, ICOM and, Museums Association of the Caribbean (MAC). His work has been published extensively and is presently a columnist and member of the Editorial Board of Arquitexto Magazine while collaborating in other editorial projects.

Alex is principal of Archipiélago, an interdisciplinary and collaborative platform focused on Architecture, Academia, and Art & Cultural Management. Along with his independent curatorial practice, he is currently general coordinator and museographer at the Museo Fernando Peña Defilló, a private museum at Santo Domingo. Currently teaching at Harvard University, and also since 2009, he has been an adjunct professor at the School of Architecture of the Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE) and since 2016 an international academic leader at Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey, Mexico. 


Alex Martínez Suárez es arquitecto, investigador y educador, cursó un Máster en Arquitectura Avanzada por el Instituto Berlage, Holanda y un posgrado en Estudio de Museos en la Universidad de Harvard, EEUU. También es egresado del programa de formación de curadores Curando Caribe. Es miembro activo del DoCoMoMo Dominicano, la Fundación Palm Inc., el ICOM y la Asociación de Museos Caribeños (MAC). Su trabajo ha sido ampliamente publicado y en la actualidad es articulista y miembro del comité editorial de la revista Arquitexto y colaborador en otros proyectos editoriales. Actualmente es coordinador general y museógrafo del Museo Fernando Peña Defilló y Director de Archipiélago, una plataforma multidisciplinaria y colaborativa involucrada en proyectos de arquitectura, academia y gestión cultural. Imparte docencia en la Universidad de Harvard, Estados Unidos, en el Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey, México y en la Universidad Iberoamericana -UNIBE-; además, ha fungido como profesor invitado en otras distinguidas instituciones académicas. Ha sido galardonado con distintos premios de investigación, becas y reconocimientos, destacándose recientemente en el Premio Nacional de la Juventud 2018 en el área de Desarrollo Cultural.



Alex Martínez Suárez est architecte, chercheur et éducateur dominicain. Il est titulaire d’un Master en architecture avancée du Berlage Institute, aux Pays-Bas, et d’un Diplôme d’Etudes Supérieures en Muséologie de la Harvard Extension School, aux États-Unis. Il est également un ancien élève du programme d’études curatoriales ,Curando Caribe. Il est un membre actif de DoCoMoMo Dominicano, de la Fondation Erwin Walter Palm, de l’ICOM et de l’Association des Musées de la Caraïbe (MAC). Ses travaux ont été publiés à de nombreuses reprises et il est actuellement chroniqueur et membre du comité de rédaction du magazine Arquitexto tout en collaborant à d’autres projets éditoriaux.

Alex est directeur d’Archipiélago, une plateforme interdisciplinaire et collaborative axée sur l’architecture, le milieu universitaire et la gestion de l’art et de la culture. Parallèlement à sa pratique de conservateur indépendant, il est actuellement coordinateur général et muséographe au Museo Fernando Peña Defilló, un musée privé à Saint-Domingue. À présent, il est enseignant à l’université de Harvard, et depuis 2009 il est également professeur adjoint à l’école d’architecture de l’Universidad Iberoamericana (UNIBE). Depuis 2016, il est leader universitaire international à l’Instituto Tecnológico de Monterrey, au Mexique.


Lisa Howie

Lisa Howie is the Director of Learning & Engagement at the National Museum of Bermuda (NMB). The transition to the NMB follows a twelve-year career in public and private education, and ten years at the Bermuda National Gallery, first as director of education & programming, then executive director. Lisa is the owner/ curator of Black Pony Gallery, showcasing contemporary artists from Bermuda and the Caribbean/ Atlantic region. She joined the board of directors of the Bank of Bermuda Foundation in 2019. Lisa is a published writer and a certified yoga teacher.

Lisa Howie es la Directora de Educación y Participación del Museo Nacional de Bermuda (MNB). Su trayectoria al MNB sigue a 12 años de carrera en el servicio educativo público y privado y diez años en la Galería Nacional de Bermuda, primero como Directora de Educación y Programación y luego como Directora Ejecutiva. Lisa es dueña y curadora de la Galeria Black Pony, donde exhibe artistas contemporáneos de Bermuda y del Caribe / región del Atlántico. Forma parte de la Junta de Directores de la Fundación del Banco de Bermuda desde el 2019. Lisa es una escritora reconocida y maestra de yoga.

Lisa Howie est la Directrice de l’Apprentissage et de l’Engagement au Musée National des Bermudes (NMB). Cette transition vers le NMB fait suite à une carrière de douze ans dans l’enseignement public et privé, et de dix ans à la Galerie Nationale des Bermudes, d’abord comme Directrice de l’Education et de la Programmation, puis en tant que Directrice exécutive. Lisa est la propriétaire / conservatrice de la Black Pony Gallery, qui met en valeur les artistes contemporains des Bermudes et de la région Caraïbe/ Atlantique. Elle est membre du Conseil d’Administration de la Fondation de la Bank of Bermuda depuis 2019. Lisa est une écrivaine reconnue et une professeure de yoga certifiée.

Nimah Muwakil-Zakuri

Nimah Muwakil-Zakuri is currently the Curator of the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago’s Money Museum and Art Collection. She is responsible for the museum which is the main outreach arm of the institution, its programming and development as well as the bank’s 50 year old art collection which was started in the 1960’s. Nimah graduated from Universidad de Oriente, Santiago de Cuba in 2007. As an IVLP alumnus in Cultural Heritage Preservation and a recent recipient of a Getty Fellowship, she attended the 2015 American Alliance of Museum’s Annual Conference and participated in the training sessions on Leadership in Museums with other curators from around the world. I.M.P.A.C.T (Independent Muslim Professional Acting Together) was co-founded in 2012 and the Trinidad and Tobago Alliance of Museums (TTAM) co-founded 2014 both by Nimah. Her deep interest in art and matters of heritage has enabled her introspection on her own unique history as a child of the “Jamaat” and 1990. The journey is a personal one, where she will attempt to document and later tell the stories that no one knows exist. It is her hope that her story will resonate not just within her immediate community, but with a wider audience.


Tasha Dougé

Tasha Dougé is a Bronx-based conceptual mixed media artist, teaching artist and cultural vigilante. Her work incites conversations around women, health advocacy, sexual education, societal “norms,” identity and Black pride. As a proud Black woman of Haitian descent, it’s very important and fundamental to her practice to depict a more holistic description of who we are as Black people and what we have contributed. She uses art to exercise expression, enact empowerment and to serve as a bridge to connect and highlight those that are excluded and overlooked. Her voice is the first tool within her art arsenal. Through provocative works, she aims to activate change. She has been featured in The New York Times, Essence Magazine and Sugarcane Magazine. She has shown nationally at the RISD Museum (Providence), The Apollo Theater (New York) and Rush Arts Gallery (Philadelphia). Internationally, Dougé has shown at the Hygiene Museum in Germany. She is an alum of the Laundromat Project’s Create Change Fellowship, Urban Bush Women’s Summer Leadership Institute, The Studio Museum of Harlem’s Museum Education Program and the Caribbean Cultural Center African Diaspora Institute’s Innovative Cultural Advocacy Fellowship. She recently completed a nine-month Executive Management Certificate program through the Center for Bronx Nonprofits. She also is on the MAC Conference Planning, MAC Communications and MAC COVID Collecting committees.


Dr. Daniela Fifi

Dr. Daniela Fifi, Ed.D is the Chief Curator at The National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. She has worked as an arts educator, and a curatorial specialist in galleries and museums in the United States and the Caribbean. She is a doctoral graduate in Art and Art Education at Teachers College, Columbia University and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Pratt Institute, New York and a Master of Arts in Art Gallery and Museum Studies from the University of Manchester, UK. Her doctoral research focuses on Caribbean art and intercultural programming in museums. Daniela has been awarded several fellowships and awards during her career including the New York State Assembly – Caribbean Life Impact Award, The Museum Education Research Fellowship at the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Samuel H. Kress Interpretive Fellowship. She has taught art education, world art history, and human development in the arts at The City College of New York and New Jersey City University. She is currently the Managing Editor of Small Axe Visualities: A Caribbean Platform for Criticism, a project of the Small Axe Journal (Duke University Press) and also serves on the peer-review board for Viewfinder, a journal of the National Art Education Association (USA). In her spare time Daniela enjoys listening to music and being in nature.

Shani Roper

Shani Roper is Curator of the University of the West Indies Museum, which reflects upon UWI’s history and development and its regional role. As the former Research Officer and Acting Director of Liberty Hall: The Legacy of Marcus Garvey, Dr. Roper believes that museums are community spaces in which visitors are encouraged to explore, be empowered, and unpack complex narratives and themes while at the same time encouraging critical thinking. Trained as a Social historian of the Caribbean, her research interests explore histories of Caribbean childhood, museums education and community engagement, sustainable heritage development and pedagogical approaches to the study of history. She has published articles on Afro-Jamaican childhood and social policy in Jamaica in Journal of the History of Childhood and Youth, Journal of Caribbean History and Caribbean Studies. 



Museo de la Universidad de las Indias Occidentales/Shani Roper
Shani Roper es Curadora de arte del Museo de la Universidad de las Indias Occidentales, el cual refleja la historia y el desarrollo de esta universidad y su papel regional. Fungió como Coordinadora de Investigación y Directora Interina del Liberty Hall: The Legacy of Marcus Garvey, la Dra. Roper entiende que los museos son espacios comunitarios en los que se anima a los visitantes a explorar, empoderarse, desempacar

narrativas y temas complejos, mientras que al mismo tiempo se fomenta el pensamiento crítico. Capacitada como Historiadora Social del Caribe, sus intereses de investigación exploran las historias de la infancia caribeña, la educación en los museos y la participación de la comunidad, el desarrollo del patrimonio sostenible y los enfoques pedagógicos para el estudio de la historia. Ha publicado artículos sobre la infancia afro-jamaicana y la política social en Jamaica en el Journal of the History of Childhood and Youth, el Journal of Caribbean History y la revista académica Caribbean Studies.

Musée de l’Université des Indes occidentales/Shani Roper
Shani Roper est le conservateur du musée de l’Université des Indes occidentales (UWI), qui réfléchit à l’histoire et au développement de l’UWI et à son rôle au niveau régional. En tant qu’ancienne chargée de recherche et directrice par intérim de Liberty Hall : The Legacy of Marcus Garvey, Mme Roper estime que les musées sont des espaces communautaires dans lesquels les visiteurs sont encouragés à explorer, à se responsabiliser et à décortiquer des récits et des thèmes complexes tout en encourageant la pensée critique. Historienne sociale de la Caraïbe, ses recherches portent sur l’histoire de l’enfance dans la Caraïbe, l’éducation muséale et l’engagement communautaire, le développement durable du patrimoine et les approches pédagogiques de l’étude de l’histoire. Elle a publié des articles sur l’enfance afro-jamaïcaine et la politique sociale en Jamaïque dans Journal of the History of Childhood and Youth, Journal of Caribbean History et Caribbean Studies.


Elena Strong

National Museum of Bermuda via Elena Strong. Strong is Executive Director of the National Museum of Bermuda. She previously led the museum’s Curatorial Department for 11 years and was responsible for the care of the Museum collections, research, education and public outreach, exhibits, developing curatorial policies and procedures and editing MARITimes, NMB’s biannual magazine. The museum explores the maritime and island history of Bermuda. Ms. Strong holds a B.Sc. in Anthropology from University College London, and a Masters in Museum Studies from the University of Toronto.

El Museo Marítimo de las Bermudas a través de Elena Strong. Strong es la Directora Ejecutiva del Museo Marítimo de las Bermudas. Anteriormente dirigió el Departamento de Conservación del museo durante 11 años y fue responsable del cuidado de las colecciones, la investigación, la educación y la difusión pública, las exposiciones, el desarrollo de políticas, procedimientos de conservación y la edición de MARITimes, la revista bianual del Museo Marítimo de las Bermudas. Este museo explora la historia marítima y de la islas de las Bermudas. La Sra. Strong es licenciada en Ciencias con especialización en Antropología de la University College de Londres y tiene una Maestría en Estudios de Museos de la Universidad de Toronto.

Le Musée national des Bermudes via Elena Strong. Madame Strong est la Directrice exécutif du Musée National des Bermudes (NMB). Elle a auparavant dirigé le département de conservation du musée pendant 11 ans et était responsable de l’entretien des collections du musée, de la recherche, de l’éducation et de la sensibilisation du public, des expositions, de l’élaboration des politiques et des procédures de conservation et de la rédaction de MARITimes, le magazine semestriel du NMB. Le musée explore l’histoire maritime et insulaire des Bermudes. Mme Strong est titulaire d’une Licence en Anthropologie de l’University College London et d’un Master en Etudes Muséales de l’Université de Toronto.
