The 2021 MAC Conference and AGM will take place virtually from November 3-5, 2021. The virtual experience is being planned as a multi-national event featuring:
MAC members and audiences from the MAC community will consider what museum and cultural work looks like in an age where we are focused on how to survive, while we must also consider how to thrive. Some of the questions to be answered at the conference include:
This work is based on archival images from the 1932 Great Abaco Hurricane which devastated Abaco and Green Turtle Cay. The artist, Leanne Russell, is an Abaconian descended from settlers, who still lives on the tiny island (Green Turtle Cay) where her forefathers settled. She is active in the community and lived though Dorian on Green Turtle Cay and has led the restoration efforts. The artist overlaid contemporary images post-Dorian with historical images to speak to the recurring trauma. Working on them gave her hope that the community could rebuild as it had before.
MAC is pleased to be able to offer several conference scholarships to its 2021 Conference and AGM. Sponsored by the Office of Strategic Partnerships at the National Museum of African American History and Culture, the AGM Fellowship Programme is a professional growth opportunity that provides financial support for Caribbean-based museum professionals at any stage of their career to attend the MAC Annual General Virtual Meeting and associated virtual conference. The goal of the fellowship is to promote greater inclusivity of museum professionals working in underrepresented regions and/or marginalised museums and cultural heritage sites.
Applicants must be first-time attendees or not have attended the MAC AGM in five years or more. Application materials may be submitted in English, Spanish, French or Dutch. Although, the events will be entirely broadcast in English.
The majority of the fellowships are restricted to Caribbean-based applicants but this year MAC is offering up to five conference scholarships to applicants with a demonstrated interest in Caribbean museology who reside in other parts of the world. For non-Caribbean based applicants, provide a short statement (250 words or less) about how your work, studies or interests intersect with Caribbean museums and/or Caribbean cultural heritage site work.
